The Chennai High Court recently made a significant decision by dismissing a case that was filed against actor Dhanush and director Aishwarya Rajinikanth. The case was related to their movie “Velai Illa Pattadhaari,” where the complaint alleged that the film did not include appropriate warnings during smoking scenes. However, the Madras High Court overturned the case based on an appeal filed by Dhanush.
“Velai Illa Pattadhaari” aka VIP was a film released in 2014 that starred Dhanush in the lead role. The movie became embroiled in controversy due to the high number of smoking scenes depicted in it. Subsequently, in 2014, a complaint was filed with the Tamil Nadu government on behalf of the People’s Organization for Handicraft Control, specifically highlighting a scene where Dhanush was shown smoking a cigarette.
Initially, the case was being investigated by the Saidapet Court. However, Dhanush decided to approach the Madras High Court to challenge the complaint. Dhanush’s argument was based on the fact that the No Smoking Act of 2003 only required smoking-related warnings in advertisements for tobacco products, not in movies. Therefore, he contended that such warnings should not be mandatory in the film. The court accepted Dhanush’s defense and subsequently dismissed the case.
It is worth mentioning that Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s name was also associated with the film as she served as its producer. Both Dhanush and Aishwarya Rajinikanth expressed their happiness and relief after the case was dismissed.

Dhanush has recently wrapped up shooting for the grand project ‘Captain Miller,’ a movie directed by Arun Matheswaran. The film also stars Priyanka Arul Mohan and Shivarajkumar. In addition to acting, Dhanush has embarked on a new venture as he has started directing his 50th movie, which is being produced by Sun Pictures.
On the other hand, Aishwarya Rajinikanth is busy directing the film ‘Lal Salaam.’ The movie features Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth in the lead roles, with Superstar Rajinikanth making a powerful appearance. Accompanying them are veteran actresses Jeevitha and Nirosha. Produced by Lyca, the film boasts music composed by the renowned A.R. Rahman and is currently nearing completion.
Both Dhanush and Aishwarya Rajinikanth are actively involved in the Tamil film industry, taking on diverse roles behind and in front of the camera. Their projects showcase their passion and dedication to their craft, as well as their desire to bring compelling stories to the audience. Fans eagerly await the release of their upcoming films and anticipate the unique cinematic experiences they will deliver.
The dismissal of the case by the Chennai High Court comes as a significant victory for Dhanush and Aishwarya Rajinikanth. It sets a precedent regarding the requirement of warnings during smoking scenes in films, clarifying that such warnings are not mandatory under the existing legislation. This decision brings relief to the film industry and allows filmmakers to exercise their creative freedom without unnecessary legal constraints.
The case serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding the portrayal of smoking in movies. While it is essential to promote awareness about the harmful effects of smoking, balancing this with creative expression and artistic choices can be a delicate matter. The court’s decision acknowledges the distinction between tobacco product advertisements and movies, recognizing the latter as a form of artistic expression that should not be subject to the same regulations.
The Chennai High Court’s dismissal of the case against Dhanush and Aishwarya Rajinikanth regarding the movie “Vellai Illa Patadhaari” brings relief to the film industry. The court’s decision clarifies that warnings during smoking scenes are not mandatory under the existing legislation. This ruling highlights the importance of preserving artistic freedom while also promoting awareness about the dangers of smoking.
