Famous singer and dubbing artist Chinmayi’s recent tweets is an utter shock. Chinmayi Sripaada is an Indian playback singer, working mainly for the South Indian film industry. She is also a voice actor, television presenter and radio jockey. She rose to fame for her critically acclaimed song “Oru Deivam Thantha Poovae” from the National award winning movie Kannathil Muthamittal.

She is one of the leading faces of #MeToo movement in south India, Chinmayi, on recently announced that her membership from the Tamil dubbing union has been terminated. The union’s harsh move against her is widely perceived as a backlash for speaking out against powerful men in the industry.

The core idea of the Me Too campaign is to allow the survivor to speak up, and to listen. This requires a safe space to vent, where support will be unconditional. Sadly, such is not the case in the Tamil Twitterverse.
Chinmayi is an acclaimed dubbing artist and has given the voice for actors Samantha Akkineni and Trisha in many movies. She recently dubbed for Trisha in blockbuster 96 and received rave reviews.
One of the most trending news in recent times online has been the #MeToo movement headed in Tamil Nadu by singer Chinmayi Sripaada. Allegations and reports have been spinning viral all over the internet for the past few days. It has been stated by various celebrities that this movement is an initiative for Women to speak up about their past personal experiences in order to ensure safety for Women in all aspects of life.

This grabbed the attention of almost everyone in the social media but for past few days Chinmayi stopped tweeting about #MeToo movement through which everyone thought that she has gave up on the issue. Now the singer has posted a screenshot of a number of texts that she received from a woman.
The screenshot implies a woman thanking Chinmayi for her courage. “Dear Chinmayi akka, i wish to tell you this. I was facing mental harassment and physical torture from my husband on day to day basis. Like majority of Indian woman I was remaining silent for years because of social stigma. After this #metoo campaign I gained inspiration and lot of confidence from you. I decided to fight back legally. Thank you for this indirect help to normal woman like me. Please keep inspiring us for gender equality. God bless you” said the screenshot.
Chinmayi posted this with the caption “What society this that stigmatises women that dont remain in abusive marriages?”

This is very inspiring and way. This is the way to go. Women are no less gender at all. Thank you chinmayi for being an inspiration. But the “mentor” should know how to do it LEGALLY as well instead of crying for justice and trial by media

My lawyers are well aware and they know what to do. In the meanwhile please read up on what Indira Jaising wrote on how the laws in our country fail women on sexual harassment cases. Speak to any lawyer and be informed. Since the GOM has only been formed now they ll take a while.

If the long arms of law is taking this long there are few possibilities . It maybe a failed institution Altogether, too much of discrepancies. We all know when that when it comes to any sort of harassment against women , the law always is very swift. And a lil bias. In a good way

You haven’t learned of the law as much as I have in the past several weeks. The law wont catch up. Ask any lawyer with regard to the MeToo cases. You’ll know what it is like.
