Lyricist Vairamuthu celebrating his 66th birthday on Monday and people who worked with him are wishing him in various ways including through their tweets. He entered the Tamil film industry in the year 1980, with the film Nizhalgal, an Ilaiyaraaja musical, directed by P. Bharathiraja. During the course of his 40-year film career, he has written over 7,500 songs and poems which have won him seven National Awards, the most for any Indian lyricist. He has also been honored with a Padma Shri, a Padma Bhushan and a Sahitya Akademi Award, for his abundant literary output.

Among the many who wished him for his birthday, political party leaders MK Stalin, Seeman were also posted tweets in their respective social media accounts praising the lyricist.

These tweets from the politicians didn’t go well with singer Chinmayi who accused Vairamuthu for sexually harassing her. Chinmayi Sripaada has accused Vairamuthu by alleging that she was asked to “cooperate” and visit him in a hotel. In the wake of #MeToo movement, there are plenty of other women who have accused Vairamuthu on the basis on anonymity. But singer Chinmayi chose to tweet. She has recalled an incident that a concert organiser asked her to “cooperate” and visit Vairamuthu in his hotel room. She said this happened in 2005 or 2006. Since Chinmayi revealed about it, she has been receiving both criticism and support from the users of Internet.

Now, on seeing these tweets from the influential leaders, Chinmayi directly questioned them about their party’s stand on women’s safety. “Respected Sir, What is the DMK’s stand on safety for women; freedom from sexual harassment? What will you do to demand fair investigation for every survivor? What will you do to make sure justice is done? How will you disengage with known sex offenders?” she asked M.K Stalin by sharing his tweet.

To Seeman, Chinmayi asked “What is your party’s stand on safety for women from sexual harassment? What will you do to ask for fair investigation? What will you do to make sure justice is done? How will you disengage with known sex offenders? Please answer, considering you are a politician.”
