Chennai: Cybercrime and Extortion through Gay Dating Apps: The Chilling Fate of a Chennai Student
The rise of internet-based scams has created a pervasive sense of fear among individuals, especially when it comes to engaging with strangers online. A recent incident in Chennai, India, highlights the dark and dangerous side of cybercrime, particularly when it involves dating apps and extortion.
It all began when a 20-year-old college student from Chennai downloaded a gay dating app, seeking connections and friendships within the LGBTQ+ community. Little did he know that his quest for companionship would lead him into the clutches of a sinister gang. One of the app’s users, seemingly an acquaintance, engaged him in intimate and explicit conversations. Encouraged by this rapport, the student agreed to meet the mysterious individual at a secret location, as suggested.

However, upon reaching the designated place, the student’s world turned into a nightmare. Instead of a friendly meeting, he was confronted by a gang of three men who emerged from their hiding spots, brandishing a knife. Fear washed over him as he realized he had been lured into a trap. The gang forcibly stripped him, capturing the distressing act on video, and then threatened him with harm if he did not comply with their demands.
The gang’s true intentions soon became apparent. They extorted money and jewelry from the terrified student, even snatching his ATM card, leaving him with no choice but to withdraw cash from his account. They also confiscated his cell phone, making sure he had no way to immediately seek help or report the crime.
Shaken and traumatized, the student mustered the courage to return home and confided in his family, who encouraged him to report the incident to the police. However, even then, the ordeal wasn’t over. The gang issued threats of releasing the explicit video they had recorded if he dared to involve the authorities.

Despite the intimidation, the student bravely approached the police, providing them with essential details about his attackers. The police launched an investigation, tracing the mobile phone number used by the criminals, which led to the arrest of two individuals named Rajkumar and Devendran. These arrests revealed a disturbing pattern of criminal activities involving fake identities on gay dating apps.
Further investigation unveiled the modus operandi of the gang. They systematically targeted college students and older individuals through intimate chats on dating apps. After luring their victims to a secret meeting spot, they used the element of surprise and fear to extort money, jewelry, and personal belongings. Shockingly, this gang’s reach extended to other districts, including Pondicherry and Tirupur, leaving a trail of victims in their wake.
As the police continue their pursuit of two absconding members, Karthik and Ramesh, the Cyber Crime Police issued a warning to the public. They urge caution when interacting with strangers on social media and strongly discourage sharing personal information, including explicit photos, with unknown individuals.
