On that fateful day, fellow passengers discovered Preethi unconscious on the platform of Indira Nagar Railway Station. She had sustained serious head injuries after falling from the train during a struggle to prevent the thieves from taking her phone. Immediate medical assistance was sought, and Preethi was initially taken to two private hospitals before being admitted to the Government Royapettah Hospital. Sadly, despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, July 8, 2023.

The grieving father, Srinivasan, lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Thiruvanmiyur, prompting an investigation into the incident. The GRP registered a case of accidental fall and began delving into the circumstances surrounding Preethi’s tragic demise. Superintendent of Police, V. Ponram, revealed that Preethi’s father informed the authorities about her missing mobile phone. Subsequently, the police initiated an analysis of call records and worked with the Cyber Crime Police to trace the phone’s location. This collaborative effort led to the identification and arrest of two suspects allegedly involved in the theft.

S .Manimaran, 19 of Adyar and B. Vignesh, 27 of Pattinapakkam, the two men accused of snatching Preethi’s mobile phone.

The two accused individuals were identified as S. Manimaran, a 19-year-old from Adyar, and B. Vignesh, a 27-year-old from Pattinapakkam. During interrogation, the arrested duo admitted their involvement in the crime. According to their statements, Preethi was standing on the footboard of the moving train, engrossed in a conversation on her phone when they attempted to snatch it. In her determined resistance, a struggle ensued, resulting in Preethi falling from the train onto the platform. Seizing the opportunity, the thieves quickly fled the scene.

Following their arrest, S. Raju, a 29-year-old worker at a fish shop in Besant Nagar, was found to be in possession of Preethi’s stolen mobile phone. Raju confessed to purchasing the phone for ₹2,000 from the duo on the evening of July 2, 2023. The police subsequently booked the two suspects on charges of murder and remanded them to judicial custody.

The tragic incident has left the community in shock and highlighted the pressing issue of mobile phone thefts on public transportation. It serves as a reminder of the vulnerability individuals face while commuting and the importance of personal safety precautions. Authorities have been urged to enhance security measures on trains and platforms to prevent such unfortunate incidents from recurring.

Preethi’s untimely death has not only devastated her family but also prompted a broader discussion on the need for stricter regulations to combat mobile phone thefts. Efforts are being made to raise awareness about the risks associated with such crimes and the significance of reporting incidents promptly to law enforcement.
