Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is facing a major crisis as heavy downpours continue to inundate the region. The iconic OMR road, along with several other areas, has been severely affected, resulting in extensive flooding. With the recent onset of the monsoon season, residents of Chennai have been grappling with the consequences of persistent rainfall, which has led to the closure of tunnels, waterlogged roads, and the displacement of countless individuals. This article delves into the current situation and highlights the challenges faced by the city’s residents.
Chennai has experienced successive weeks of heavy rainfall, leaving the city and its outskirts inundated with floodwaters. The situation worsened overnight, with areas such as Thiagaraya and West Mambalam witnessing the accumulation of floodwaters on roads and the subsequent closure of tunnels, including the Thiagarayanagar Madli Tunnel and Rangarajapuram Tunnel. The rainfall has been particularly intense, with Avadi recording a maximum of 20 cm, while Mamallapuram received 18 cm. The incessant rain has transformed low-lying areas, such as KK Nagar and Ashok Nagar, into waterlogged zones resembling flooded forests. Not only have roads become impassable, but houses have also been submerged, leaving residents stranded and unable to access basic necessities.

The heavy rains have wreaked havoc on Chennai’s infrastructure, resulting in numerous roadblocks and traffic diversions throughout the city. The closure of the Thiagarayar Nagar Madli Tunnel and Rangarajapuram Tunnel has disrupted the daily commute for many residents. Additionally, the waterlogging on KK Nagar’s Rajamannar road and Valasaravakkam’s Mega Mart road has further contributed to traffic congestion.
