Train services on the Howrah-Chennai route have finally resumed after a horrific train crash that occurred on Friday night. The accident claimed the lives of 275 individuals and left over 1,000 passengers injured on board the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express. The resumption of services took place approximately 51 hours after the tragic incident, following the completion of restoration work on Sunday night.

The restoration process involved significant efforts to repair and rehabilitate the affected railway track. On Sunday night, a coal-laden goods train departed from the Vizag port in Andhra Pradesh towards the Rourkela Steel plant, signaling the resumption of train services on the same track where the Bangalore-Howrah train had encountered the deadly accident just days before. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was present at the scene to oversee the resumption of services, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing the aftermath of the tragic event.

Minister Vaishnaw took to Twitter to announce the restoration of services on the track, stating, “Down-line restoration complete. First train movement in section.” This marked an important milestone in the recovery process, providing hope for passengers and their families who had been affected by the incident. Subsequently, within a short span of two hours, the up line was also restored, allowing train operations to return to normalcy.

An empty goods train became the first to travel on the up line of the accident-affected section. This particular track was the same one where the ill-fated Coromandel Express had been running before diverting into the loop line and colliding with a stationary goods train. The resumption of train services on both the down and up lines was a significant step toward restoring transportation links and bringing life back to normal for the affected region.

Minister Vaishnaw, visibly moved by the tragic incident, expressed his sentiments while announcing the restoration of the accident-affected section. He emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to normalize the entire section and fulfill the responsibility of reuniting missing persons with their families. The minister confirmed that three trains had already departed from the section, and plans were in place to run around seven more that night.
