Soon after the news on Jyoti Sri Durga’s demise surfaced, users of Internet are conducting an online protest against the entrance exam which is required to be cleared to get a seat in medical colleges. After being unable to clear the exam in the first attempt, Jyoti was preparing to face the exam for the second time. To our shock, with just 36 hours to go for the examination, Jyoti ended her life in the fear of disappointing her loved ones by failing in the examination.

Actor and president of Makkal Needhi Maiam political party posted a tweet questioning when we as a society are going to put a full stop for the trauma being created by NEET. “Jothi’s death should be the death of NEET. State and central government should think of an alternate solution immediately and act immediately. It is our duty to give our children the courage they need” the politician said.

Along with him many of cinema personalities including director Cheran, Kasthuri, Editor Suresh raised voice against the NEET system. Here’s some of their tweets regarding the demise of the young student :

Named as Jyoti S Durga, the 19 year old girl ended her life by hanging in her home in Madurai in the early hours of Saturday. The medical aspirant was attending coaching classes to prepare for her NEET exam for the second attempt. She had written the NEET exam last year but only managed to score 100 odd marks.

The girl ended her life after writing a suicide note. She mentioned that she would disappoint her family members and others if she did not get a medical seat in her 6 page long suicide note. Apart from the suicide note, she also left behind a video recording in her phone.

In the letter she wrote that it is not the fault of her friends and relatives. “Don’t blame yourself and anyone I love you all.” she said and mentioned all of many of her friends and relatives.

“You people had so many expectations on me. I am sorry. If I can’t get the medical seat in college, all your hard work will go in vain. I am sorry/ I am tired” he letter read.
