Binita, an employee at an IT firm, allegedly used a dating app to befriend men and subsequently extort money from them by levelling fake charges of molestation. This article aims to provide an overview of the events surrounding this case and analyze the implications of such actions on society.
Binita Kumari, hailing from Bihar, connected with the victim through the popular dating app, Bumble. On May 28, she took him to a hotel in Gurugram’s Sector 23 area under false pretenses. Once there, she attempted to force him to consume beer against his will. Sensing something was amiss, the victim refused to drink and promptly left the hotel. Shortly after, Binita contacted him, accusing him of misbehavior and molestation, threatening to file a police complaint against him.

Following the false allegations, Binita’s accomplice, Mahesh Phogat, contacted the victim and demanded a sum of ₹5 lakh to settle the case. Eventually, they agreed upon a payment of ₹2 lakh. Fearing legal consequences, the victim paid them ₹50,000 and promised to settle the remaining amount. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he approached the Gurugram Police for assistance.
Upon receiving the victim’s report, the police initiated an investigation and registered an FIR against Binita Kumari and Mahesh Phogat at the DLF Phase 2 police station. The police devised a plan to apprehend the culprits. The victim contacted Binita, arranging to hand over the remaining money near Sai Temple in Maulsari Market. Mahesh Phogat was caught red-handed while receiving the money, leading to the subsequent arrest of Binita Kumari from DLF-3’s U block.
This case highlights several significant issues that warrant attention and reflection. Firstly, it exposes the potential dangers associated with online dating platforms. While dating apps provide opportunities to connect with others, incidents like these underscore the need for increased caution and awareness when engaging in online interactions.
Moreover, Binita Kumari’s actions of extorting money through false allegations of molestation have severe consequences. False accusations not only harm innocent individuals but also undermine the credibility of genuine victims who have experienced harassment or assault. Such incidents perpetuate a culture of fear, suspicion, and mistrust, making it more challenging for real victims to seek justice.
Additionally, this case raises concerns about ethical conduct and professional integrity. Binita Kumari, an employee of an IT firm, and Mahesh Phogat, associated with an NGO, violated the trust placed in them by their respective organizations and the community at large. Their actions reflect poorly on the organizations they represent, highlighting the need for stringent hiring procedures and ongoing vigilance to prevent such misconduct.
