Popular singer and one of the leading faces of #MeToo movement in south India, Chinmayi, on Saturday announced that her membership from the Tamil dubbing union has been terminated. The union’s harsh move against her is widely perceived as a backlash for speaking out against powerful men in the industry.

Chinmayi is an acclaimed dubbing artist and has given the voice for actors Samantha Akkineni and Trisha in many movies. She recently dubbed for Trisha in blockbuster 96 and received rave reviews. “Anyway as of now it looks like ‘96 will be my last in Tamil. It is a good film to end my Tamil dubbing scene with if the termination were to continue. Bye Bye!(sic),” she said.

Chinmayi, however, has said that she is not surprised about losing her membership. “Anyway I always knew my career would be done with. Society is run by the powerful. The predators will NEVER be questioned. Neither will disciplinary action be taken against them. Fact that Mr Radha Ravi is still President of the Dubbing Union despite all the allegations,” she said.

Sooo given to understand that I have been terminated from the dubbing union. Which means I can longer dub in Tamil films henceforth. The reason stated is that I haven’t paid ‘subscription fees’ for 2 years though this hasn’t stopped them from taking 10% off my dubbing income

I expected the first axe to go down from the dubbing union. I dont know yet if I’ll be given my membership back. Just a decision that’s been taken without informing me that my membership is terminated. I am still on the much publicised concert tour in the US.

Anyway as of now it looks like ‘96 will be my last in Tamil. It is a good film to end my Tamil dubbing scene with if the termination were to continue.

Because I am asked on why I didn’t pay Dubbing Union – I was expressly told that I needn’t pay anything for a while since the dubbing union had court cases. But 10% of my dubbing income would be taken in cash. No receipts. No signs. No vouchers.

On seeing this news in a news paper, Tamilisia Soundararajan, a doctor and President of the Tamilnadu Bharatha Janata Party, raised her voice in support of Chinmayi through her official twitter account.
