BJP is a National Party in India. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is an Indian politician belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is currently serving as the Member of Parliament from Kaiserganj. Top Indian wrestlers, including Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik, resumed their protests against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, on Sunday, April 23, 2023. The wrestlers have accused Singh of sexually assaulting women wrestlers, and have demanded that the findings of the oversight committee, led by Olympic medalist Mary Kom, be made public.

The women wrestlers had initially staged protests in January 2023, which led to the formation of an oversight committee by the sports ministry to investigate the allegations. However, the wrestlers claim that their demands have not been fulfilled and that the promises made to them have not been kept. As a result, they returned to Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to stage protests.

Bajrang Punia, in a statement to the press, invited all political parties to join the protests, stating that the wrestlers’ fight was not political, but a fight for the women of the country. He said, “When we win medals, everyone, not just one party, comes forward to congratulate us, and neither are we affiliated with a single party. We are a part of this country and all Indians are welcome to join the protests. If we don’t fight for the women of the country, then we can’t fight against anything.”

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, who had come to support the wrestlers’ protest in January, had been asked to step down from the stage. The wrestlers had then stated that they did not want to make the protests political, and no politicians would be allowed to speak on the stage. Punia had emphasized that the protests were not political, but a fight for justice for the women wrestlers.

The Delhi Police has sought a report from the probe committee set up by the sports ministry to investigate the allegations. A senior officer stated that seven complaints have been received against the WFI president, and all of them are being investigated. An FIR will be registered after concrete evidence comes to light. The inquiry is headed by DCP (New Delhi) Pranav Tayal.
