In a bizarre report that got updated in a number of reputed media portals, students, hailing from West Bengal are getting “high” by using flavoured condoms. According to a statement provided by a shopkeeper to News 18, Students are making use of large number of condoms, not to contracept but to get the feel of consuming alcohol that helps one to go intoxicated.

It has been reported that students from Durgapur which is located in West Bengal are involved in such inventive yet suspicious activity. It has been reported that the students are soaking the different kind of flavoured condoms in hot water and drinking the liquid, according to Money control. They are also getting a positive result through this method and are getting high that lasts 10-12 hours after consuming it.

News 18 reports that the sale of flavoured condoms has drastically increased in various parts of Durgapur which includes Durgapur city centre, Bidhannagar, Benachiti and Muchipara, C zone, A Zone. A shop keeper reportedly questioned a regular customer and came to know about the reason for the massive hike in the sales of flavoured condoms.

“Earlier, three to four packets of condom were sold per shop everyday. And now packs of condoms are disappearing from a store” Shopkeepers of a medical shop in Durgapur told News 18.

Durgapur RE college Model school chemistry teacher Narul Haque said “Soaking condoms in hot water for a long time breaks down large organic molecules and creates alcohol compounds. This compound is keeping the youth intoxicated”, according to reports.

“There is some kind of aromatic compound is found in the condom. Alcohol is produced by breaking it down. This aromatic compound is also found in the dendrites. So many are seen to be intoxicated with dendrites” Dhiman Mandal, Superintendent of Durgapur sub distrct hospital told a news portal.

Bizarrely, condoms joins the list of easily available items which are unlikely candidates of substance abuse such as drinking cough syrup, hand sanitizer, aftershave, sniffing glue, paint, nail polish, whiteners and even eating Iodex on bread. Police officials of West Bengal didn’t comment on the matter yet but the Police officials of Hyderabad, recently said that they cannot book substance abusers as per the law of Indian Penal Code.

Further, they added that they cannot punish the abusers under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic act as products such as whiteners and cough syrup have a low count of sedatives. The incident grabbed the attention of online users and they couldn’t resist themselves from commenting on the same.
