On Monday, the Supreme Court backed a 10 percent quota in jobs and education for the poor or the people who belong to Economically weaker section (EWS). Followed by the same, actress cum activist Kasthuri who recently appeared in one of the recent seasons of Bigg Boss show as a contestant, came up with a tweet saying that reservation should be based only on economy and called caste based reservation as “social injustice”. Her tweet is receiving various kind of reactions from the users of online platforms.

The Supreme Court has upheld the 103rd Constitution Amendment providing for 10% quota for the economically weaker section from unreserved categories. The beneficiaries van avail the quota for admission to government as well as private, unaided institutions and government jobs.

The scheduled castes, Scheduled Tribes and non-Creamy layer other backward classes were excluded from the newly inserted clauses of Article 15 (4) and 16 (4).

A person belongs to the general category comes under EWS quote if his or his family’s income is less than Rs. 8 lakh. The source of income also includes agriculture, business and other professions. A person under this category must have less than 5 acres of agricultural land. Along with this, his residential flat should not be 200 square meters or more.

The EWS reservation provides relaxation in government jobs and in applying for admission to educational institutions. There will be a 10 per cent reservation under the EWS quota for admission to institutions and government jobs.

While, users of online medium and public are debating over whether EWS is needed at this hour or not, Tamil actress Kasthuri who is currently busy issuing her opinions over the current affairs of the society, came up with a tweet saying that reservation should only be based on economy of an individual.

Not at all Mam ..I belong to BC category…I am in a Govt job & during my official inspections & visits, i could see lot of scheduled castes people are at the end of the social & economic strata without even basic amenities. They are really suffering.
