The Avadi police, through their Cyber Crime Wing, apprehended a 33-year-old woman named V. Sravana Sandhya in Bengaluru on charges of cheating Telugu-speaking men by falsely promising marriage. Sandhya, a native of Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh and residing in Madivala, Bengaluru, was arrested after a complaint was filed by S. Ashok Chaitanya, a call center employee residing in Ayapakkam, Chennai. The suspect had allegedly duped Chaitanya out of ₹9 lakh and cut off all communication when he requested his money back following her evasive responses regarding their impending marriage.

The Deception, According to police reports, Sandhya connected with her victims through a Telugu matrimony website. After exchanging photographs and engaging in friendly conversations, she gained their trust. In Chaitanya’s case, he willingly transferred a substantial sum of ₹9 lakh to Sandhya after she solicited money from him. In addition, he even gifted her an expensive mobile phone. However, as soon as he started pressing her for concrete plans regarding their marriage, Sandhya began avoiding the topic and eventually ceased all communication with him. Suspecting foul play, Chaitanya lodged a complaint with the cyber crime helpline number 1930, leading to the formation of a special team by Avadi Police Commissioner K. Shankar to investigate the case.

Arrest and Seizure, Thanks to the efforts of the Cyber Crime Wing, Sandhya was apprehended at a women’s hostel in Madivala, Bengaluru. The police seized three mobile phones and six SIM cards from her possession. The investigation revealed that Sandhya primarily targeted Telugu-speaking men aged above 33, exploiting their aspirations for marriage and using their emotional vulnerability to extort money. With the evidence obtained, the police built a strong case against the suspect, intending to bring her to justice.
