In a shocking tale that unveils the dark underbelly of privacy invasion, a cab driver in Banglore capitalized on an unsuspecting passenger’s personal conversation to orchestrate an elaborate extortion scheme. The unsuspecting woman, sharing intimate details with a friend during a cab ride, unknowingly fell prey to the cab driver’s sinister ploy, resulting in the extortion of Rs 20 lakh in cash and gold worth an equal amount. The cab driver’s audacious scheme finally came to light, not through the woman’s complaint, but via an expensive bottle of single-malt whisky.

The disturbing saga began in November 2022, when the unsuspecting woman engaged a cab through a ride-hailing app. Seated in the backseat, she engaged in a personal conversation with a male friend, inadvertently revealing intimate details about her marital problems and her contemplation of a divorce. Unbeknownst to her, the cab driver, identified as Kiran Kumar, was meticulously eavesdropping on her revelations.

Exploiting the sensitive information he had gathered, Kumar embarked on a devious plan. He tracked down the woman and her husband on social media, concocted a false acquaintance with the male friend, and proceeded to blackmail her. The driver threatened to expose her deeply personal secrets to her husband, casting a shadow of fear and apprehension over her. In a vulnerable state, the woman succumbed to Kumar’s demands, allegedly paying him a staggering Rs 20 lakh to ensure her secrets remained hidden.

Despite receiving the extortion money, Kumar’s malevolent intentions did not abate. He continued to torment and harass the woman, leaving her trapped in a distressing cycle of fear. Fearing further damage to her reputation and that of her husband, the woman resorted to desperate measures. She borrowed gold ornaments weighing 960 grams, with an estimated value of Rs 20 lakh, from her mother and grandmother and handed them over to Kumar as an additional payment to quell his threats.

The cunning cab driver might have continued his sinister activities unnoticed, were it not for an unforeseen twist of fate involving an indulgent bottle of single-malt whisky. On a routine patrol, Police Sub-Inspector Mounesh Doddamani encountered a group of men indulging in what appeared to be a celebration within a parked cab. Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the men were savoring Glenlivet whisky, a premium Scotch brand known for its lavish price tag. This unexpected encounter triggered a series of events that would lead to the unravelling of Kumar’s extortion scheme.

Under questioning, Kumar, residing in Bhoothaiah Layout, Hesaraghatta, confessed to orchestrating the blackmail scheme, confessing that he had amassed a staggering Rs 40 lakh over a span of five months through his nefarious activities.

The law enforcement authorities managed to convince the woman to step forward and file a formal complaint, despite her initial reluctance due to fears of damaging her family’s reputation. On July 28, Kumar’s reign of terror was brought to an end with his arrest. While the police were able to recover the pawned gold, it was revealed that Kumar had squandered the Rs 20 lakh in online betting.
