Anna Tower Park, spanning over 15 acres, is a well-known landmark in Chennai’s Adyar zone, much like the LIC Building and Light House. The tower located within the park was built during the Indian International Trade and Industries Fair and was inaugurated in 1968 by then-vice president V V Giri, during the tenure of late Tamil Nadu chief minister C N Annadurai. It provides a panoramic view of the city.

Over the years, the park has been a peaceful spot for visitors, with its trees and small pond. In 2010, it underwent renovations, including the addition of a walkway, yoga center, skating rink, and fountain. However, the tower was closed to the public in 2011 due to incidents of suicides and public nuisance.

Following requests from visitors and the government’s initiative to enhance iconic venues in the city, renovation work on the tower began. The tower has now been renovated at a cost of Rs 97.60 lakh, and measures have been taken to ensure visitors’ safety, including the installation of grills on all 12 floors of the tower covering the balconies, at a cost of Rs 44 lakh.

The tower has also been adorned with lights and decorated with cultural paintings at a cost of Rs 9 lakh and Rs 11 lakh, respectively. The children’s play area and fitness zone have been refurbished, and maintenance work has been carried out on the fountain.

The reopening of the tower has been well-received by local residents, particularly those who frequently visited before. Despite the rain during the reopening ceremony on Monday, many visitors turned up to catch a bird’s eye view of the city. Entry to the tower is free of cost.

The inauguration event was attended by Chennai Mayor R Priya, Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru, Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Anna Nagar MLA M K Mohan, senior bureaucrats, and DMK functionaries. The authorities have noted that there is no proposal for a lift inside the tower at present.

Recently, the people visiting Anna Tour started scribbling on the walls of the iconic building, damaging the aesthetic value of it. Reports suggested that many spectators visiting the tower are scribbling their names on the walls of the tower which is irritating the other spectators visiting the tower.
