Ahmedabad, a city in the western state of Gujarat, was gripped by sorrow and shock as a horrific accident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday. A speeding Jaguar SUV, moving at an alarming speed of 160 km/h, crashed into a crowd that had gathered at the site of a previous accident on ISKCON Bridge, resulting in the death of nine people and leaving around 10 others injured. Among the deceased were a police constable and a Home Guard jawan who had arrived at the scene to respond to the first collision.

The tragic incident occurred at approximately 1 am on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway in the Satellite area of Ahmedabad. Prior to the Jaguar’s collision, a Thar (SUV) had collided with a truck at the same location, drawing the attention of local traffic police and a Home Guard jawan. As they reached the scene to manage traffic and handle the situation, bystanders gathered out of curiosity to witness the aftermath of the initial accident.

It was during this precarious moment that the Jaguar SUV, recklessly speeding towards the ISKCON bridge, ploughed into the crowd of onlookers. Five people lost their lives instantly, while four others succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at various hospitals. Alongside the constable and Home Guard jawan, other victims included young individuals who had come to Ahmedabad from different cities and were residing there as paying guests.

The harrowing scene was captured on video, showing the angry bystanders attempting to confront the car’s driver, Tathya Patel, after the tragic collision. Patel was also injured in the crash and was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the accident, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in connection with the case.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Neeta Desai, addressed the media at the Sola Civil Hospital, emphasizing that the Jaguar was found to be travelling at an extremely high speed. While it does not appear to be a case of drunk driving, Desai asserted that the investigation is ongoing, and once Patel’s medical condition allows, he will be arrested to face legal consequences.

As news of the tragedy spread, grieving families of the victims rushed to the Sola Civil Hospital, demanding justice for their loved ones. The incident has shaken the city and the nation, igniting calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and safety measures to prevent such heart-wrenching accidents. ISKCON Bridge, the location of the unfortunate incident, is a popular hangout spot for youngsters during late-night hours, often gathering to share tea and snacks.
