After 13 Years, Shankar Getting Slammed For A Scene He Made In Sivaji !!


After more than a decade, director Shankar who is known for making high budget films with advanced technology, subjected to severe online criticism for his portrayal of the characters “Angavai-Sangavai” in his blockbuster film “Sivaji. Netizens who saw the original pictures of the girls acted in the movie, realized that the scene normalized racism. Few of them tagged the official twitter account of the filmmaker and questioned him for the way he degraded dark skinned girls in his film.

Due to the lockdown implementation in India, most of the people are killing their time by scrolling feeds of online social media platforms. The original pictures of the girls whom director Shankar casted to make a comedy scene in the 2007 released film, are trending now in online platforms. On seeing the pictures, online using youngsters who were kids at the time of the film’s release, seemingly realized that the scene and dialogues are insensitive. They started slamming filmmaker Shankar for his untasteful portrayal.

The film was released worldwide on 15 June 2007 in Tamil, and subsequently released in Telugu as a dubbed version on the same date. The film revolves around a well-established software systems architect, Sivaji, who returns home to India after finishing work in the United States. On his return, he dreams of giving back to society with free medical treatment and education. However, he faces several problems in achieving his goal due to the corrupted system of Tamil nadu. He was forced to sort the problems out by involving in violence.


The film was positively received by critics, and became a commercial success worldwide. It went on to win a National Film Award, three Filmfare Awards and two Vijay Awards. The controversial scene takes in the episode where the protagonist stalks a girl of his kind to marry her. When the girl’s father denies the friendship of Sivaji, a man (played by Solomon Paapaiah) appears and asks Sivaji to befriend with his two daughters “Angavai and Sangavai”. Both the girls could be seen deliberately painted dark to get avoided by Sivaji, played by Rajinikanth.

Later Sivaji would use the family of Angavai-Sangavai to make the heroine’s family jealous. Now, as the original pictures of the girls played by Angavai, Sangavai are doing rounds, Twitterati are slamming the filmmaker. “We were laughing for this, now I could understand how racist the scenes are” wrote one of a twitter user whereas another tagged the official twitter account of the filmmaker and questioned him.
