Nagma revealed that the message she received was not from a private number, but from a number that seemed to be affiliated with the bank. After clicking the link, she received a call from someone who claimed to be a bank employee and offered to assist her with her Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements. The fraudster was able to gain remote access to her phone and proceeded to create a beneficiary account on her internet banking platform. They then transferred one lakh rupees to a nationalized bank, while Nagma received several OTPs, indicating that the fraudster had attempted to transfer the money multiple times before succeeding.

Fortunately, Nagma did not lose a significant amount of money, but the experience was undoubtedly distressing. In recent days, there have been similar incidents of cyber fraud in Mumbai, affecting numerous individuals. Actress Shweta Menon was also defrauded of Rs 57,636 in a similar scam before Nagma. Menon filed a complaint with the police, prompting the Mumbai Police to issue an advisory urging people not to divulge personal information related to their accounts and to refrain from clicking on unknown links.

Cyber fraud is becoming increasingly common in today’s world, with many fraudsters targeting unsuspecting individuals through their phones or computers. Cybercriminals often use social engineering tactics to trick individuals into divulging personal information or clicking on links that can compromise their devices. These fraudulent activities can cause significant financial losses and emotional distress for the victims.
