In a deeply troubling incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a state government-run residential school in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district has become the center of attention due to the disappearance of a staggering 89 girls from its premises. The discovery was made during a surprise inspection conducted by District Magistrate Neha Sharma at the Kasturba Gandhi Residential Girls School in Paraspur, unveiling a disturbing situation that has prompted swift action and raised concerns about the safety and welfare of the students.

The residential school, meant to provide a nurturing environment for young girls’ education, took an ominous turn when authorities found a significant discrepancy between the registered student count and the number of girls actually present. Out of the total 100 girls enrolled in the school, a mere 11 were accounted for during the inspection, leaving a disconcerting gap of 89 missing students.

The District Magistrate’s inquiry found the school’s hostel warden, Sarita Singh, unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the absence of such a large number of students. She also took the opportunity to engage with the present students, gaining insights into the facilities and conditions at the school.

As news of the incident spread, the District Basic Education Officer (BSA) and District Coordinator for Girls’ Education were summoned to the scene to assess the gravity of the situation. Their arrival marked the beginning of a comprehensive investigation aimed at unraveling the circumstances behind the disappearance of the girls.

The initial investigation revealed startling discrepancies in the school’s records. The attendance registers failed to account for the presence of girls from classes 7 and 8 after August 17. However, fabricated attendance was reported by the hostel warden on the Prerna portal, leading to the disconcerting revelation that the missing students’ absences had been falsely accounted for, potentially implicating a broader network of deception.

Promptly responding to the severity of the situation, the district authorities took decisive action. A police complaint was lodged against four individuals, including the hostel warden, a full-time teacher, a watchman, and a Prantiya Raksha Dal (PRD) jawan who was responsible for gate duty during the night. This action underscores the commitment of the authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions or lack thereof. Further investigation unveiled a breach of protocol in the school’s operations. The District Coordinator for Girls’ Education confirmed that protocols were in place to document the movement of students leaving the school premises. However, it became apparent that these protocols had not been adequately followed, leading to an information gap regarding the movement of the students.

Telephone conversations with parents indicated that they were informed that their daughters would be returning home on August 19. However, the hostel warden stated that the girls had left on August 21. The conflicting information further deepened the mystery surrounding the girls’ whereabouts.
