A 23-year-old woman has alleged that she was raped by a man she befriended on Facebook. She said that she was also raped by the man’s brothers and was later forced to marry him in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district.

The victim said that the accused raped her and also made a video of the crime to blackmail her further.

According to a report in PTI, the 23-year-old victim told cops that the accused had befriended her via Facebook. The accused, identified as Sonu, forcibly confined her in a hotel in the town and raped her. The accused’s brothers then joined him and they all raped her in turns and also made a video of the act.

They then threatened the victim saying that the obscene video would be made public if she did not give in to their demands. She was then allegedly forced to marry the prime accused who the victim said had hidden his true religion from her as well.

A police complaint was registered in this regard and the accused Sonu and 10 of his relatives have been booked under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Shamli Superintendent of Police Ajay Pandey told PTI that the investigation in the case is underway.

The law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh has been a cause of concern for the Yogi Adityanath government in the state and the repeated crimes against women have raised questions on the way the issue is been handled.

The latest case of gang rape being reported from Shamli is another such case where the accused used social media platforms to befriend a victim and then abuse her after filming acts of sexual assault on them.
