Vijay Sethupathi and the word versatility go hand-in-hand. Having played a variety of roles in his short but highly impressive career so far, he will be seen playing a septuagenarian character in the upcoming Tamil drama Seethakathi, which according to its director Balaji Tharaneetharan, is not a biopic of the popular Tamil philosopher.
The trailer of Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi’s new film Seethakathi was released recently, and what is garnering maximum attention is Vijay’s look of an old man. The actor plays Ayya Adhimoolam in the film, who is a veteran drama artiste and actor. But things start getting ugly when one day he suddenly disappears, leaving his films’ directors in the lurch, which forces them to make a complaint with the producer’s council.
Kollywood’s veteran director Bharathiraja is also a part of this film and plays the role of a director. It was reported that initially, he was approached for the role of Ayya, but he refused.
This is not the first time Vijay Sethupathi has played an older character in his career. In Soodhu Kavvum, he played a 40-something man who makes a living out of low-profile kidnappings. He played a much older character in Orange Mittai. While it doesn’t come as a surprise he’s essaying a 70-something character in Seethakathi, the effort that he has put in to play the character does catch one’s attention.
In an interview with Cinema Vikatan,Vijay Sethupathi shared many exclusive updates about the movie and his personal life. He revealed that the role of “Ayya” was initially supposed to be done by bollywood superstar Amitabh Bhachchan. Lter the makers tried to approach Kamal Haasan as well. But he says that he asked Balaji Dharanitharan about doing that role back in 2013 itself.
Vijay Sethupathi also opens about the viral screenshot of Karthik Subbaraj saying “You will know his soon” to his follower who asked “Who is Vijay Sethupathi ??” before the release day of Thenmerku Paruvakaatru.
Vijay Sethupathi says that Karthick Subbaraj would have told it in a very polite way. It is you who read it in a “mass” tone. Watch the video below :
