A case of alleged serial sexual assault and blackmail of scores of women by a gang, suspected to be politically influential in Pollachi, triggered widespread political and social outrage on Monday. A leaked video of a victim pleading with her tormentors prompted political leaders to make protest against the criminals.
Acting on a girl’s complaint, the Coimbatore Rural police had on February 25 arrested three youth. Subsequently, on March 5, they picked up K. Thirunavukkarasu, another accused. Mobile phones seized from them allegedly contained over 40 video clips of women being sexually abused.
Based on the claims made by Thirunavukkarasu that politically influential persons were also involved in the crime, local units of opposition parties in Pollachi had recently staged a massive protest seeking action. The opposition alleged that ruling party men including those close to Deputy Speaker Pollachi V. Jayaraman were involved in the incident.
On February 26, the day after the case was filed, the victim’s brother was assaulted by four men, including AIADMK functionary Nagaraj, who is also known as “Bar” Nagaraj. The police registered a First Information Report on the same day on charges of intimidating the victim’s brother, uttering obscenities and voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons.
“Bar” Nagaraj, youth wing member from Pollachi has been expelled from the party after it came to light that he was allegedly involved in multiple cases of sexual harassment and for threatening the brother of the victim.
The party cancelled Nagaraj’s membership soon after a police complaint was filed by the victim’s brother. In addition, DMK chief MK Stalin raised doubts whether the ruling AIADMK was “colluding” with the perpetrators of the crime.
Now a recent video has been surfaced in Thanthi Tv which shows a huge number of people seen demolishing the bar which belongs to Nagaraj. Destroying everything inside the bar out of anger, people also heard uttering slogans for the justice of Pollachi rape victims.

Deputy Speaker Pollachi V Jayaraman held a press meet in Chennai to deny his involvement. “Opposition parties are trying to project me in the wrong light for political gains. The victim will soon reveal the truth,” he said, adding that he met the DGP to discuss the case.
Nagaraj was the 34th ward Amma Peravai secretary in Pollachi. The issue turned into a major political controversy on Monday with DMK president MK Stalin accusing the ruling party, on Twitter, of trying to protect the accused in the case. Soon, the hashtag #arrestpollachirapists started trending on social media.
Earlier today a video of two of the culprits Thirunavukarasu and Sabari Rajan getting beaten up by a group of men went viral and video of Thirunavukarasu’s mother defending him also surfaced.
